Geneti mutation leaves 1500 calves extraordinarily hairy

A genetic mutation causing extraordinarily hairy calves has affected more than 1500 animals nationwide.

The organisation which provided the bull semen, Livestock Improvement, will not pay compensation to the 900 affected farmers.

Craig Littlin's stock has been affected by the mutation and says LIC should deal with the situation in a more hands on way.

"We felt that they should've come out and said, hey we've got this sort of problem you need to get rid of these animals and you know we think a fair and just way of doing this is to compensate you."

LIC genetics general manager Peter Gatley says the mutation is natural, and recommends farmers to use the stock as beef animals, or to cull any would be carriers.
