Hawke's Bay infected by wooly nightshade

Share |

Hawke’s Bay residents are being asked to keep watch for the invasive woolly nightshade plant.

The region has been infected by both woolly nightshade berries and flowerwoolly nightshade, known to cause nausea, and irritation of the skin and respiratory tract.

The plant is easily identified by its distinctive hairy, oval leaves, and the small lilac flowers which amass in clusters at the end of its branches.

It also forms green berries up to 18mm which yellow when ripe.

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council biosecurity officer Alice McNatty says the council is asking residents to remain cautious around the plants, and is offering landowners a free service to remove it.

Hawke’s Bay residents can report a woolly nightshade plant by phoning HBRC’s Biosecurity team phone 06 833 8083 or 833 8021, or call 0800 108 838.
