Some of the sharpest minds in the diabetes field are looking at ways of making a dent in the epidemic this weekend.
Diabetes New Zealand has gathered an array of speakers to mark its 50th anniversary conference in Wellington.
President Chris Baty says the rate at which diabetes is increasing is a huge challenge.
"I mean it was nearly 10 percent in the last year and that's year on year and we've got to kind of realise that this is a problem that's bigger than just a health problem."
Chris Baty says the conference is looking at everything from kids leaving home with diabetes, pregnancy and diabetes, and the economic impacts of the disease.
