The prospect of the US launching a military assault on insurgents in Iraq seems stronger, following comments by America's military chief.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Martin Dempsey says he doesn't believe an "industrial strength" force is needed right now, but he's not ruling it out.

"If the assessment comes back and reveals that it would be beneficial to this effort and to our national security interests to put the advisers in a different role, we'll provide that option and we'll move ahead."
