Grass to reduce bird strikes at airports

By: Newstalk ZB staff | New Zealand News | Saturday March 23 2013 6:29

AgResearch scientists have come up with a way to reduce bird strikes at airports.

It's a new kind of grass which has been bred to deter wildlife and insects.

It's treated with a fungus which insects and animals don't like, deterring birds from the area.

Initial studies show 70 to 80 percent fewer birds in the areas where this grass is sown.

Business Analyst Sam Livesey says bird strikes cost the aviation industry more than a billion dollars a year in damage to planes and deterrent measures.

He says common strategies such as using guns or dogs to scare birds away are reactionary, but the grass eliminates the initial risk by ensuring the birds will stay away naturally.
