HAMILTON - Two people are in hospital after two logging trucks and a car crashed on a road between Rotorua and Tauranga.

Pyes Pa Road was closed just before 3.00PM as emergency services scrambled to pull out two trapped people - one in a truck and the other in the car.

The arterial route is expected to stay closed for at least two more hours.

Light traffic is being diverted, but heavier vehicles can not take the alternate route and are advised to avoid State Highway 36.
