A 10-year-old boy has died after a vehicle rolled near Hokitika.
His eight-year-old sister was rescued alive from the vehicle which rolled into a pond at a goldmine near Ruatapu in Westland last night.
The girl spent more than two hours in the submerged vehicle before being rescued by Police Officers and firefighters.
She was taken to Grey Base Hospital by helicopter suffering hypothermia and is reported to be doing well.
Police recovered her brother's body from the vehicle and are not looking for any other victims of this evening's accident.
The alarm was raised soon after 7pm by the vehicle's driver who ran several kilometres seeking help.
A scene guard is in place overnight and an investigation into the accident will resume this morning.
