The Prime Minister will spend the weekend with his Australian counterpart Julia Gillard in Queenstown.
John Key doesn't believe Kiwis' rights in Australia will be clarified at the meeting.
Mr Key says he won't be telling Ms Gillard how they should be treated there, just as he wouldn't expect her to tell him how Aussies should be treated here.
Mr Key is telling Kiwis thinking about going to Australia to know what they're entitled to before they leave.
"I'd say to New Zealanders that think about crossing the Tasman - make sure you understand and you go there with your eyes open about what your rights and opportunities are, because (it's) very real that you may not get the rights that you think you're going to enjoy - that's a matter for them to consider."
Australians have more rights here than Kiwis do there.
