New Zealand could export more than 9000 tonnes of cows blood under a new agreement.
Meat processor Silver Fern Farms has signed a deal with an American biotechnology giant Proliant to produce bovine blood plasma.
The blood is used in the manufacture of bovine serum albumin, an ingredient in a number of vaccines and animal medicines.
Silver Fern Farms chief executive Keith Cooper says the deal will mean exports of cows blood will increase six-fold over the next five years.
Automated blood collection systems will soon be installed at Silver Fern Farms Te Aroha and Finegand plants.
