Job losses in the country's smaller towns are being described as a crying shame for our rural community.
This week alone 100-jobs have been lost in Kawerau at Norske Skog , while Blue Sky Meats in Southland is looking at cutting staff numbers.
President of Rural Women New Zealand Liz Evans, says it's a worry for the regions, which can be decimated by job losses.
"It just has such a gutting effect, knock on effect to the rest of the farming community which rely on the servicing industries in the small towns and provinces," she says.
Liz Evans says once people go, services do too.
