More transparency in milk prices expected

By: Katie Bradford-Crozier | Rural News | Wednesday July 25 2012 8:13

There'll be more transparency in milk prices after a crucial Bill passed through Parliament last night.

The Dairy Industry Restructuring Bill allows Fonterra to set up the Trading Among Farmers shareholder scheme.

But it also forces the dairy giant to be more transparent with how it sets its farm gate milk price.

Primary Industries Minister David Carter says that has to happen because of Fonterra's dominance in the market.

"Fonterra's farmgate milk price is effectively the price that all processors must pay in order to attract milk supply from farmers. Confidence and transparency is therefore crucial."
