Rail mothballing shows Govt not listening

By: Michael Oliver | Rural News | Thursday September 6 2012 8:36

Farmers say KiwiRail's decision to mothball the Wairoa-Gisborne rail line shows the Government has stopped listening to them.

Federated Farmers' Gisborne president Hamish Cave says without a reliable way of transporting goods in and out of the region, farmers will suffer.

He says the province has been left in the lurch.

"I would say that's probably the feeling right around provincial New Zealand that this Government and previous governments have forgotten where the income comes from in this country to pay for health and education and all those sorts of services."

Federated Farmers is calling on the Government to feed funds from its Highways of National Significance plan into rural roads.
