Beef and Lamb New Zealand says sheep farmers could stand to make an extra $180 million a year by switching their focus to lamb production.
It says Kiwi sheep farmers’ fixation with lamb prices is costing the industry, at a time when sheep farm numbers have fallen by more than 6000 in the past 20 years.
CEO Scott Champion says an extra $3.47 billion in gains could be made by 2025 by breeding more stock.
He says with global demand for lamb set to shoot up, it’s a perfect chance for sheep farmers to shift their mindset towards producing more lambs.
