Fonterra’s new milk processing plant near Darfield has opened, producing 40 tonnes of milk powder on its first day.
The $500 million plant will process 2.2 million litres of milk a day into whole milk powder bound for South East Asia, China, and the Middle East.
The plant’s capacity will triple once a second milk drier used to produce milk powder is opened.
Fonterra’s milk products director Brent Taylor says the plant opened without a hitch after nearly two years of construction.
It’s Fonterra’s first new processing plant in 14 years.
