New plants added to banned list

By: Farming Show Staff | Rural News |

Thirteen plants have been added to a list of banned species, as local and central government clamps down on noxious weeds.

The new additions to the National Pest Plant Accord (NPPA) join a list of plants which are illegal to grow, distribute, or spread

Among those now added to the list include asparagus fern, drooping sedge, orange cestrum, and Queen of the Night.

The NPPA has been through three reviews since its inception in 2001, the latest beginning last year.

The 13 new additions to the list are:

  • Asparagus fern
  • Drooping sedge
  • Otahuna sedge
  • Orange cestrum
  • Red cestrum
  • Queen of the Night
  • Clerodendrum
  • Japanese walnut
  • Dusky coral pea
  • Chilean Mayten
  • Bat-wing Passion Flower
  • Monkey’s Comb
  • Polypody

A summary of submissions to the latest NPPA review can be read here
