Kiwi milk powder is in hot demand in China, other dairy nations are catching up.
The latest NZX Dairy Futures report shows while China’s demand for skim milk powder has doubled in the last year, European and American milk powder importers now make up 45 per cent of the market there.
New Zealand supplies 43 per cent of skim milk powder to the Asian giant.
Things are brighter for whole milk exports, with New Zealand dominating 98 per cent of the Chinese market, despite exporting 235 million tonnes less than 12 months ago, a fall of six per cent.
Indonesia continues to be a major growth market for Kiwi dairy, with imports of whole milk powder growing by 30 per cent in the first quarter of 2012.
