A number of Horowhenua families face a treacherous journey home tonight with a major slip blocking the road to their rural homes.
Gladstone Road near Levin is covered in debris and may remain impassable for at least another two days.
Horowhenua Civil Defence Controller Tony Thomas says another access road is being used but it's only suitable for four wheel drives.
"It's a forest track, so it's not a public road. It's a fallen metal track through the forest, which goes over the hill along side the Ohau river but it is passable for four wheel drives."
Tony Thomas says contractors have stabilised the slip and are now working to remove the debris.
