Whanganui River water levels to be monitored

By: Nina Burton | Lower North Island News | Tuesday July 17 2012 5:56

Water levels on the Whanganui River will continue to be monitored today.

The region has been hit by heavy rain over the past 24 hours.

Wanganui District Council emergency manager Max Benseman says the river is predicted to peak at 7.5m at the City Bridge.

He says that's likely to happen between 7am and 9am this morning.

"It takes 10 to 12 hours for the peak of the river to come downstream...so any rise in the river won't be seen until mid-morning."

Mr Benseman says Kowhai Park will be closed until further notice, and surface flooding is possible on the Whanganui River and Kaiwhaiki Road so drivers are urged to take care.
