ISSUED BY MetService AT 9:42am 19-Jun-2013 URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST IN: Marlborough, Canterbury, Buller, Westland, Fiordland, Wellington, Nelson HEAVY SNOW FOR CANTERBURY AND SOUTHERN MARLBOROUGH. SEVERE GALES ABOUT WESTERN AND NORTHERN PARTS OF THE SOUTH ISLAND, INCLUDING WELLINGTON A very strong and cold southery flow spreads over the South Island tonight, with snow expected to lower to near sea level about southern and eastern areas.Heavy snow is expected about Canterbury, and southern parts of Marlborough above 300 metres, commencing in the south tonight, then further north Thursday morning.This is a significant event which is expected to persist through until Friday morning, accumulations likely to exceed 50cm above 300 metres, and 100cm above 500 metres. Lesser amounts of snow are expected below 300 metres, with significant rainfall accumulations likely with 60 to 90mm expected over the period. In addition, severe gale southeasterlies are expected to develop about western and northern areas, from Fiordland to Nelson, including northern Marlborough and Wellington tomorrow (Thursday) and persist into Friday afternoon. Damaging gusts of 130 km/h are expected in exposed places, but could possibly reach 150km/h through parts of Westland. People should be aware that snowfalls are likely to cause widespread disruption to traffic, especially about alpine passes and higher level roads. Damaging winds are likely to bring down trees and powerlines, make driving dangerous for high sided vehicles and motorcycles, and can cause damage to some structures. FORECAST: Rain is expected to turn to snow above about 200 metres in the south tonight, then further north to Marlborough during Thursday morning. Significant accumulations are expected until Friday night. In addition, areas at lower levels are expected to receive a significant amount of rain during the period.In the 36 hours from midnight tonight (Wednesday) south of Arthurs Pass, but from 6am Thursday north of Arthurs Pass, expect 30 to 60cm above 300 metres, but 100 to 150cm above 500 metres.
